In July, Brisfest, M-Shed and Venue Magazine will stage an exhibition charting four decades of community music festivals in Bristol.

Sounds Like Bristol – an interactive, audio visual installation – will open on July 11th in a disused public space in the city centre as yet to be confirmed.

Brisfest, Venue and M-Shed are now appealing to the tens of thousands of people who have attended Ashton Court Festival and Brisfest over the years to share their memories.

“We’d love to hear from people who want to share their memories,” says Brisfest coordinator Poppy Stephenson.  ”Whether it’s a funny anecdote, a tale of true love found, a photo, a poem, a song, a painting or an old programme…we’ll find a way to include as many of them as possible in our Sounds Like Bristol exhibition in July and there’ll be free tickets for the most interesting submissions.”

The story began in 1974 when a group of friends got together to stage a small music event at Ashton Court Estate. They wanted to create a platform for local musicians to entertain the local community. Over four successive weekends in July 1974 local bands played from the back of a flat bed truck to a small crowd of festival goers at Ashton Court. Bristol City Council donated £50.

This marked the beginning of four decades of community music festivals, organised by the people of Bristol, for the people of Bristol. Ashton Court Festival, and its successor Brisfest, would become the city’s biggest, and most important musical events with thousands of local acts entertaining crowds over the years.

“There’s no doubt that Ashton Court Festival holds a very special place in everyone’s hearts,” says Poppy Stephenson. “We really want to do something that will celebrate the history of Ashton Court Festival and also mark the beginning of a new era for community music festivals at the Estate. Community music festivals have been incredibly influential in terms of establishing Bristol’s musical identity so let’s celebrate that!

If you would like to to contribute to the exhibition please share your memories by calling Aisling at Brisfest on 0117 328 1492, emailing aisling@brisfest.co.uk or sharing on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/brisfest.

BrisFest moves to Ashton Court!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:32 pm

Bristol City Council has given BrisFest, Bristol’s community music festival, the green light to move the event to Ashton Court Estate later this year. The festival, which will take place on September 22nd and 23rd, has been running for four years on the harbourside, attracting 25,000 visitors in 2011.

This announcement marks the beginning of a new era of music festivals at Ashton Court. BrisFest began after the much loved Ashton Court Festival, which started in 1974, went bankrupt in 2007. A group of local volunteers felt it was vital for Bristol to retain an accessible, affordable music festival so the not-for-profit Bristol Festival Community Group was set up.

The Bristol Festival Community Group created BrisFest, a new festival with a unique mix of music, street art, theatre, comedy and circus, and a distinctly “Bristol” feel. The event showcases the best of the South West with something for everyone from toddlers to talent scouts.

As a not-for-profit festival BrisFest is almost entirely run by volunteers and all profits are reinvested back into the festival to make it bigger and better each year, year, supporting local artists and training volunteers in everything from stage management to recognised qualifications in health and safety.

Now in its fifth year, BrisFest’s rapidly increasing popularity means that is has outgrown its city centre site. The move to Ashton Court will increase the festival’s capacity to 40,000 over two days.
“Having started off on a smaller scale, we’ve built BrisFest from the ground up over the last four years,” said Poppy Stephenson. “We now have the people, the resources and the systems we need to bring us home to Ashton Court, our ‘spiritual home’!”
Tickets for BrisFest 2012 have been on sale since last year, when the public was asked to pledge its support for the festival’s move to Ashton Court by buying their tickets in advance.

“Ticket sales are going really well,” said Poppy Stephenson. “We’re well on our way to 10,000 and we expect a sell-out event.”“BrisFest 2012 at Ashton Court is going to be an extravaganza of music, street art, theatre, comedy and circus, the likes of which Bristol has never seen before. We’re going to give this great city a festival it can be proud of.”To mark the festival’s move to Ashton Court, a limited number of special “Swiftpass” tickets have been released available for those who purchase a ticket in the coming weeks. People holding these tickets, priced at £30 for the weekend (the same price as a normal ticket), will get special wrist bands which allow them to skip queues at the gate, bars and toilets all weekend. “Swiftpass” tickets are available on a first come, first served basis here for a limited time only.

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:29 pm
We are holding an open meeting for anyone who wants to get more involved in BrisFest!

Come along and find out more about The Bristol Festival Community Group, the festival plans for the future, why we are a charity and how you can get more involved.

Lots of our current committee members will be there to answer your questions, and we’ll be able to let you know what opportunities there are with us, including partnerships with local businesses, venues and organisations as well as individuals.

We welcome everyone to join the team, whether you have experience already or would like to gain some! It’s a great way of meeting people, giving something back to the community, gaining experience in events, building skills for your CV and having fun!

We need people for: Promotional Team, Web Design, Graphic Design, Copywriters, Décor Team, VIP Area Coordinator, Stage Teams, plus lots of other roles (and obviously lots of stewards!).

So, we hope to see you there on Tuesday 8th November at 7pm.

Hamilton House is the building above The Canteen (on Stokes Croft) and we will be in a meeting room upstairs. There will be someone in the main foyer to point you in the right direction.

If you can’t make this one, but would like to get involved then please email our Volunteer Managers, Alice & Xenie on getinvolved@brisfest.co.uk

Lots of love from

The BrisFest Team xxx
